Hai ch\u1eef PADME [b\u00e1t m\u00ea], ngh\u0129a l\u00e0 hoa sen, t\u01b0\u1ee3ng tr\u01b0ng cho tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7. Hoa sen t\u1eeb b\u00f9n m\u1ecdc l\u00ean nh\u01b0ng l\u1ea1i kh\u00f4ng \u00f4 nhi\u1ec5m v\u00ec b\u00f9n. T\u01b0\u01a1ng t\u1ef1 nh\u01b0 v\u1eady, tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7 c\u00f3 kh\u1ea3 n\u0103ng \u0111\u1eb7t ng\u01b0\u1eddi tu v\u00e0o v\u1ecb tr\u00ed kh\u00f4ng m\u00e2u thu\u1eabn \u1edf nh\u1eefng n\u01a1i m\u00e0 ng\u01b0\u1eddi thi\u1ebfu tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7 \u0111\u1ec1u s\u1ebd th\u1ea5y \u0111\u1ea7y m\u00e2u thu\u1eabn. Tr\u1ea1ng th\u00e1i thanh t\u1ecbnh c\u00f3 \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c l\u00e0 nh\u1edd s\u1ef1 k\u1ebft h\u1ee3p thu\u1ea7n nh\u1ea5t gi\u1eefa ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ti\u1ec7n v\u00e0 tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7, \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c th\u1ec3 hi\u1ec7n qua \u00e2m cu\u1ed1i, HUM [h\u1ed3ng]. \u00c2m n\u00e0y \u1ee9ng v\u00e0o tr\u1ea1ng th\u00e1i b\u1ea5t nh\u1ecb, kh\u00f4ng th\u1ec3 ph\u00e2n chia. Trong hi\u1ec3n th\u1eeba, ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ti\u1ec7n v\u00e0 tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7 b\u1ea5t nh\u1ecb c\u00f3 ngh\u0129a l\u00e0 ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ti\u1ec7n \u1ea3nh h\u01b0\u1edfng tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7, v\u00e0 tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7 \u1ea3nh h\u01b0\u1edfng ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ti\u1ec7n. Trong m\u1eadt th\u1eeba, s\u1ef1 h\u1ee3p nh\u1ea5t n\u00e0y \u1ee9ng v\u00e0o m\u1ed9t ni\u1ec7m t\u00e2m th\u1ee9c trong \u0111\u00f3 ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ti\u1ec7n v\u00e0 tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7 \u0111\u1ed3ng lo\u1ea1t hi\u1ec7n h\u00e0nh. N\u00f3i v\u1ec1 ch\u1ee7ng t\u1ef1 c\u1ee7a n\u0103m v\u1ecb Thi\u1ec1n Ph\u1eadt, HUM l\u00e0 ch\u1ee7ng t\u1ef1 c\u1ee7a B\u1ea5t \u0110\u1ed9ng Ph\u1eadt [Akshobhya], s\u1ef1 \u0111\u1ee9ng y\u00ean kh\u00f4ng g\u00ec c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 lay chuy\u1ec3n n\u1ed5i.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

V\u1eady L\u1ee5c T\u1ef1 \u0110\u1ea1i Minh Ch\u00fa, Om mani padme hum, c\u00f3 ngh\u0129a l\u00e0 d\u1ef1a v\u00e0o \u0111\u01b0\u1eddng tu k\u1ebft h\u1ee3p thu\u1ea7n nh\u1ea5t ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ti\u1ec7n v\u00e0 tr\u00ed tu\u1ec7 m\u00e0 ng\u01b0\u1eddi tu c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 chuy\u1ec3n h\u00f3a th\u00e2n mi\u1ec7ng \u00fd \u00f4 nhi\u1ec5m c\u1ee7a m\u00ecnh th\u00e0nh th\u00e2n mi\u1ec7ng \u00fd thanh t\u1ecbnh c\u1ee7a Ph\u1eadt. \"DigitalIt is very good to recite the mantra Om mani padme hum, but while you are doing it, you should be thinking on its meaning, for the meaning of the six syllables is great and vast. The first, Om is composed of three letters, A, U, and M. These symbolize the practitioner’s impure body, speech, and mind; they also symbolize the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Can impure body, speech, and mind be transformed into pure body, speech, and mind, or are they entirely separate? All Buddhas are cases of beings who were like ourselves and then in dependence on the path became enlightened; Buddhism does not assert that there is anyone who from the beginning is free from faults and possesses all good qualities. The development of pure body, speech, and mind comes from gradually leaving the impure states and their being transformed into the pure.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How is this done? The path is indicated by the next four syllables. Mani, meaning jewel, symbolizes the factors of method-the altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love. Just as a jewel is capable of removing poverty, so the altruistic mind of enlightenment is capable of removing the poverty, or difficulties, of cyclic existence and of solitary peace. Similarly, just as a jewel fulfills the wishes of sentient beings, so the altruistic intention to become enlightened fulfills the wishes of sentient beings.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The two syllables, padme, meaning lotus, symbolize wisdom. Just as a lotus grows forth from mud but is not sullied by the faults of mud, so wisdom is capable of putting you in a situation of non-contradiction whereas there would be contradiction if you did not have wisdom. There is wisdom realizing impermanence, wisdom realizing that persons are empty, of being self-sufficient or substantially existent, wisdom that realizes the emptiness of duality-that is to say, of difference of entity between subject an object-and wisdom that realizes the emptiness of inherent existence. Though there are many different types of wisdom, the main of all these is the wisdom realizing emptiness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable hum, which indicates indivisibility. According to the sutra system, this indivisibility of method and wisdom refers to wisdom affected by method and method affected by wisdom. In the mantra, or tantric, vehicle, it refers to one consciousness in which there is the full form of both wisdom and method as one undifferentiable entity. In terms of the seed syllables of the five Conqueror Buddhas, hum is the seed syllable of Akshobhya – the immovable, the unfluctuating, that which cannot be disturbed by anything.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thus the six syllables, om mani padme hum, mean that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha. It is said that you should not seek for Buddhahood outside of yourself; the substances for the achievement of Buddhahood are within. As Maitreya says in his Sublime Continuum of the Great Vehicle (Uttaratantra), all beings naturally have the Buddha nature in their own continuum. We have within us the seed of purity, the essence of a One Gone Thus (Tathagatagarbha), that is to be transformed and fully developed into Buddhahood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
